Part 3: The Cold Awakening
I answered his call on the third ring, placing the phone on speaker and setting it on the tray table beside my bed. My newborn son was resting softly in his clear bassinet, completely oblivious to the panic vibrating through the speaker. On the other end of the line, the wind was howling through the parking lot as Daniel shouted over the roar of passing traffic.
“Claire! What did you do? What is going on?” Daniel screamed, his voice cracking with an unhinged mixture of anger and desperation. “The credit cards are dead! The valet took the keys! They just towed the SUV right off the lot while my mother was watching!”
I adjusted my pillow, keeping my breathing completely measured and slow as I answered him. “The car was never yours, Daniel,” I said, letting every word land with heavy, icy precision. “Neither were the cards, the apartment, or the life you’ve been parading around for the past three years.”
In the background, I could hear Elaine shrieking about the cold, while Melissa berated the restaurant staff for refusing to call them a luxury ride. Daniel was hyperventilating, his illusion of power crumbling into ash with every second of silence on my end. “You can’t do this to me!” he yelled, his composure completely shattered. “I am your husband! We have a child together!”
“You left your child six hours after he was born so you could eat hotpot,” I reminded him, my voice devoid of any heat or pity. “You told me to take the bus home with a newborn while my body is still healing from surgery. Do you really think you still have a wife?”
Before he could scream back, I hung up the phone and set it on silent. Daniel was not a man driven by love; he was driven by status and convenience. I knew with absolute certainty that he would rush straight back to the hospital, not out of concern for me, but to demand that I undo the financial ruin raining down on his head.
Twenty minutes later, the heavy glass doors of the hospital lobby rattled as Daniel burst through them, followed closely by his breathless, furious family. He stormed toward the elevators, intent on marching into my recovery room on the third floor to force me into submission. But as he reached the elevator bank, three tall men in sharp grey suits stepped out, blocking his path.
“Daniel Vance?” the lead attorney asked, stepping forward with a leather briefcase in hand. Daniel glared at him, trying to push past. “Get out of my way! My wife is on the third floor!”
“Mrs. Vance is no longer on the third floor,” the lawyer replied with absolute composure, opening his briefcase to pull out a stack of legal documents. “And you will not be seeing her tonight, or any night in the foreseeable future.”
Daniel froze, looking around the bright, bustling lobby as patients and staff began to stare at the commotion. “What are you talking about? Who are you?” Daniel demanded, his hands trembling as he gestured toward the ceiling. “She’s my wife! She’s in room 308!”
The attorney offered a thin, professional smile that sent a shiver down Daniel’s spine. “Room 308 was vacated fifteen minutes ago. Mrs. Vance has been transferred to the executive wing under private security. Furthermore, I am here to serve you with formal legal notice.”
