Part 3: The Exposed Footage
By 2:00 PM, the storm outside the downtown apartment had begun to roll in, matching the dark energy brewing inside my chest. I sat in front of dual monitors, reviewing the digital footprint my family had left behind over the past few months. They had been sloppy, driven entirely by greed and the arrogant assumption that I would remain completely blind to their moves.
My phone rang, displaying Liam’s name on the screen. I let it ring three times before picking it up, leaning back in my chair.
“Hey, big brother,” Liam’s voice snickered through the speaker, laced with the same smug mockery he had used on the staircase. “Mom’s wondering when you’re coming back to apologize. She’s willing to overlook your little outburst if you sign the updated trust documents by five o’clock.”
“And if I don’t?” I asked smoothly, keeping my tone perfectly neutral.
“Then the video goes live,” Liam threatened, his voice dropping into a sleazy whisper. “I have fifteen seconds of footage showing your pregnant wife screaming hysterically on the floor while Dr. Vance tries to administer a sedative to control her. I’ll post it to every news outlet in the city with a caption saying you’ve been keeping an unstable woman locked in the house.”
He actually thought he had me trapped. He didn’t realize that in his rush to record Emily’s humiliation, he had captured something far more damaging to himself and our mother.
“You really should have checked the audio track before you edited that clip, Liam,” I said quietly.
Silence stretched across the line for a second. “What are you talking about?”
“When you were standing on the landing recording Emily,” I explained, scrolling through the enhanced audio file I had extracted from the cloud backup of our house security network, “the hallway camera above your head captured your entire conversation with Mom right before I walked in.”
I pressed play on my secondary device, holding it up to the microphone.
Liam’s recorded voice echoed clearly: “Make sure the doctor gives her enough of the compound to keep her incoherent for forty-eight hours. Once David signs the credit release, we’ll have her committed to the private facility in Westchester.”
Eleanor’s voice followed, crisp and cold: “Just make sure the cameras in the foyer are turned off. If David finds out before the midnight transfer, the bank won’t release the funds.”
The silence on Liam’s end of the phone was absolute. I could hear his shallow, panicked breathing over the line as the reality of what he was hearing sank in.
“You… you pulled the security drive?” he stammered, his bravado instantly collapsing.
“I own the security company that installed the system, little brother,” I said, cold amusement lacing my words. “Did you really think I didn’t have redundant off-site backups for every camera in that house?”
“David, wait—Mom was the one who came up with the idea!” Liam began to babble, his voice rising in pitch as panic took over. “She said you were giving everything to Emily’s family! She said we were going to get left with nothing!”
“You had everything,” I interrupted firmly. “You had a monthly allowance of thirty thousand dollars, a brand-new sports car every year, and a executive title at the firm that you didn’t work a single day to earn. But that wasn’t enough for you, was it? You wanted to strip my wife of her dignity.”
“David, please don’t do this,” he pleaded, his voice trembling. “Mom is already calling the legal team to draft the psychiatric hold papers for Emily.”
“Let her call them,” I said coldly. “In fact, tell her to invite Dr. Vance back to the house at 8:00 PM tonight for a final celebration. Tell her I’m coming back to sign the papers.”
“You… you’re coming back?” Liam asked, hope foolishly rekindling in his voice.
“Oh, I’ll be there,” I promised. “And I’m bringing a few guests who are very eager to meet Dr. Vance.”
I hung up the phone without waiting for his reply and turned to the lawyer sitting across the room—Sarah Jenkins, one of the top white-collar criminal defense attorneys in the state.
“Is the federal warrant ready?” I asked her.
Sarah smiled, pulling a signed document from her leather folder. “The district attorney reviewed the security audio and the forged line-of-credit documents an hour ago. The state police, along with the Medical Board investigative team, will be surrounding the estate at seven-thirty.”
