PART 7: The Final Serving
The dining room emptied rapidly as horrified relatives fled into the night, desperate to distance themselves from the catastrophic scandal. Eleanor stood alone in the grand foyer, stripped of her arrogance, weeping pitifully as agents ordered her to vacate the premises immediately. She looked at me with bloodshot eyes, begging for mercy and asking where she was supposed to go with all her accounts frozen shut.
I stood up from the head of the table, calmly removing my soiled apron and setting it neatly across Eleanor’s chair. “You told me to show some respect at your family’s table,” I said softly, looking down at the woman who had tried to humiliate me. “But you forgot that this house, this table, and this entire life belong strictly to me.”
I watched from the front porch as Eleanor was escorted down the driveway into the cold evening air, leaving her with absolutely nothing. My baby kicked gently against my ribs, reminding me of the clean, bright future waiting just ahead. I walked back inside, locked my front door, and finally sat down to enjoy my peace in absolute silence.
