Part 2: The Silent Discovery

Part 3: The Recorded Truth

Mira unlocked her tablet, her small fingers tapping rapidly across the glowing glass screen until a clear video file appeared on the display. She tilted the device backward through the seat gap so I could see the high-definition recording taken from across the airport gate.

In the video, the woman was sitting on a sleek metal bench, her designer purse resting beside her. She was speaking angrily into her phone, her face flushed with frustration as she gesticulated wildly with her free hand. Because Mira’s tablet had a high-grade directional microphone attachment—a gift from Julian for her last birthday—the audio was crisp, clear, and unmistakable.

“Marcus, listen to me very carefully,” the woman’s recorded voice hissed through the tablet’s low-volume speaker. “I just left the corporate office. The internal auditors are coming in tomorrow morning at nine, but I’ve already wiped the secondary drive. I have the master physical ledgers right here in my carry-on bag.”

My eyes widened in shock as I listened to the woman lay out a step-by-step account of a massive corporate embezzlement scheme, complete with names, dates, and account numbers.

“I’m on the Skycrest flight to North Avelon right now,” the woman continued on the recording, completely oblivious to the eight-year-old child sitting twenty feet away with a recording device. “Once we land, I’m transferring the offshore accounts directly to the cayman shell company. If anyone asks, I was never in Bellhaven today. Make sure the border team has the secondary passport ready.”

Mira paused the video and turned back to look at me, her expression steady and devoid of any childish fear. “When she started yelling at you about Theo crying, I remembered what Dad always used to tell me about bad people who try to make everyone else feel small.”

“What did he tell you, sweetie?” I asked, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes at the sudden mention of my husband’s memory.

“He said that people who act really mean in public are usually hiding something very dark inside,” Mira said softly. “So when I offered to trade seats with you, I opened the tablet to the video file, zoomed in on the official State Police Financial Crimes tip portal page, and typed her name right at the top of the reporting form.”

She showed me the screenshot she had displayed to the woman. It showed the video playing on one side of the screen, and a draft of an official federal whistleblower form on the other side, addressed directly to the State Prosecutor’s office in North Avelon.

When Mira had tapped the woman on the shoulder, she hadn’t said a single word. She had simply pointed at the screen, typed the words “Should I press submit?” into her notepad app, and stared directly into the woman’s eyes.
