The room felt ice-cold as I read the dates aloud. Three months after my father died, Claire hadn’t been visiting my mother out of charity; she had been gathering signatures.
“You had her sign power-of-attorney documents under the guise of medical insurance forms while she was heavily medicated post-surgery,” I said, my voice echoing off the marble. “You’ve been draining his residual estate into an offshore account in your maiden name.”
Claire sneered, dropping the pretense entirely. “Your father owed my family millions from a failed investment, Ethan. I only took back what was rightfully ours.”
“My father didn’t owe you a single cent,” my mother spoke up, her voice surprisingly strong despite the pain racking her body. “I kept all his original ledgers.”
