Part 3: The Falling House of Cards
Allison burst into uncontrollable, hysterical sobs, pulling the white hospital sheet up to her chin to hide her face from the seven furious members of the Coleman family surrounding her bed.
“David, I can explain! Please, let me explain!” she wept, her voice echoing off the sterile tile walls. “He promised me he would fund my luxury boutique startup! He told me he would give me a private equity share in his commercial development firm!”
“You lied to me!” David screamed, his face turning dark purple as he grabbed a high-end luxury fruit basket off the counter and slammed it onto the floor, sending organic grapes and expensive crystal glasses shattering across the room.
“I divorced my wife of ten years for you!” David roared, his hands tearing through his styled hair. “I gave up my family! I threw away my two children! I signed over our joint banking accounts, sacrificed our reputation, and told my entire family that you were carrying my male heir!”
David’s mother, a woman who prided herself on her high-society social status, luxury country club memberships, and prominent family lineage, clutched her pearl necklace and gasped for air.
“You deceitful, low-class gold digger!” his mother shrieked at Allison, her voice carrying down the quiet hospital corridor. “We bought you a brand-new luxury European sports coupe! We put a down payment on a waterfront villa condo in your name! We paid for your private health insurance policies and your luxury spa retreats!”
Megan rushed forward, her eyes wild with rage as she pointed a manicured finger directly at Allison’s face.
“We kicked Catherine and her two useless kids out onto the street for you!” Megan yelled, her corporate composure completely vanishing. “We told everyone in our private social circle that David was finally getting a real family! Do you have any idea what this will do to our corporate reputation and our business loan applications?!”
Dr. Aris stepped between the shouting family and the hospital bed, his hand hovering over the wall-mounted emergency security button.
“That is enough!” the doctor commanded sternly. “This is a high-profile private medical facility. If you do not control yourselves immediately, I will have our armed private security team escort all seven of you off the premises!”
David stood in the center of the destruction, his body shaking violently as the full, crushing weight of his colossal mistake crashed down upon his shoulders.
Just two hours ago, he had sat at a mahogany desk in a high-end legal firm, signing a final divorce decree with a smug, arrogant smile on his face.
He had looked at Catherine—the woman who had stood by his side when he was broke, the woman who had helped him build his commercial real estate agency from the ground up—and treated her like trash.
He had handed her two helpless children, stripped her of their joint credit accounts, took the keys to their suburban home, and watched her walk away without a single tear in his eyes.
And now, he was standing in a hospital room, exposed as a complete fool before his entire family, his colleagues, and the prestigious medical staff he had tried so hard to impress.
“David, we have to call our legal team right now!” Megan demanded, grabbing his arm tightly. “We need to file emergency tax litigation and fraud charges against this woman! We need to freeze every single trust fund transfer and bank account we set up for her!”
David mechanically pulled his high-end smartphone from his leather jacket pocket, his fingers trembling so badly he could barely type his passcode.
He didn’t dial his corporate lawyer.
He didn’t dial his private wealth manager.
With his heart hammering violently against his ribs, he opened his contacts and dialed Catherine’s number, pressing the phone against his ear, praying to God that she would answer.
He wanted to tell her it was all a terrible mistake.
He wanted to tell her that he was coming home, that he would buy her a new luxury SUV, that he would take her on a five-star international vacation, and that they could rebuild their quiet life together.
The phone rang once.
Rang twice.
Then, a cool, automated voice echoed through the speaker: “The number you have dialed has been permanently disconnected or is no longer in service.”
David’s heart sank straight into his stomach.
At that exact moment, a loud notification chimed on Megan’s phone, followed by a sudden alert on David’s mother’s phone.
It was an official corporate press release from Vance & Sterling International, the largest private equity firm in Western Europe.
Megan opened the link, her eyes widening in absolute horror as she read the front-page headline aloud to the room:
“Prominent European Investment Trust Appoints Catherine Coleman as Chief Executive Trustee and Managing Partner of $150 Million Offshore Real Estate Portfolio.”
