Part 2: The Shadows of Oakridge

Part 3: A Legacy of Secrets

The floorboards creaked in the hallway leading from the kitchen, announcing Iris’s approach before she even stepped into view. I stood frozen in place, my hands clasped tightly together to hide the violent tremors racking my frame. Every survival instinct I had honed over eighteen quiet, peaceful years was screaming at me to grab my daughter and run.

Iris walked back into the living room, holding a tall glass of ice water. She looked between the two of us, sensing the strange, heavy stillness that had settled over the space like thick smoke. Her bright smile faltered slightly as she noticed my pale face and the rigid way Ryan was standing by the door.

“Mom? Are you okay?” Iris asked, setting the glass down on the side table. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost. What were you guys talking about?”

“Nothing, sweetheart,” I managed to lie, my voice strained and hollow. “Ryan was just telling me about the drive back from the dance.”

Ryan let out a short, quiet laugh that held no humor whatsoever. He didn’t look at me; his eyes were fixed entirely on Iris, watching her with a mixture of intense scrutiny and deep, unresolved bitterness.

“That’s not what we were talking about, Iris,” Ryan said smoothly, stepping around the coffee table. “Your mother was just about to explain why your medical records from the state registry don’t exist before your fifth birthday.”

Iris blinked, her eyebrows knitting together in total confusion. “What are you talking about? My medical records?” She looked over at me, seeking the comfort and logical explanation I had always provided whenever life grew complicated. “Mom, what is he saying?”

The clock on the wall seemed to speed up, each second ticking away the tiny margin of safety I had built around our lives. Ryan had calculated this entire evening with terrifying precision. He hadn’t asked Iris to the prom because he liked her; he had targeted her to settle a debt created by parents long before either of them was born.

“Eighteen years ago, your mother worked as the head financial manager for Vance Holdings,” Ryan explained, his voice echoing clearly through the quiet room. “When the federal investigation started, three million dollars vanished from the offshore accounts, and the lead accountant disappeared overnight.”

Iris turned her head slowly to stare at me, her young face pale, her eyes wide with a sudden, painful realization that everything she knew about her quiet, modest mother was beginning to fracture.

“Mom…” Iris whispered, her voice cracking with fear. “Tell him he’s wrong. Tell him you don’t know what he’s talking about.”
