Peter gestured for me to sit down as he opened the file attached to the letter.

“The terms of your mother’s trust were strict,” Peter continued. “If you were unmarried or divorced at the age of thirty, the trustee board—which Sean had secretly been trying to buy into—could petition for guardianship over the assets on behalf of your children.”

My breath caught in my throat. The sudden coldness, the mistress, the threat to take my son and daughter… it wasn’t about ending our relationship. It was a calculated move to strip me of legal standing right before the trust matured.

“Sean knew you had no family to fight him in court,” Peter said. “If he divorced you and took custody, he would have gained control over millions of dollars the moment you turned thirty.”

“So you took me in…” I whispered.

“By marrying me,” Peter said, “you legally joined an existing protective trust framework. My legal authority as your husband and the children’s step-grandfather completely blocks Sean or any third party from touching a single cent of your inheritance.”
