PART 3: The Broken Mask
The roar of Sean’s furious shouting bounced off the high ceilings of the estate.
My heart slammed against my throat as I instinctively rose from the leather chair.
Peter stood up smoothly, his face remaining entirely calm despite the violence breaking through his front door.
He reached into his desk drawer once more and pulled out a heavy, polished silver revolver.
He checked the cylinder with a quick, practiced flick of his wrist before slipping it into his jacket pocket.
“Stay behind me, Hannah,” Peter commanded softly, his voice deadpan and steady.
“Do not step out from behind this desk under any circumstances.”
“Peter, no! He’s out of his mind!” I gasped, grabbing the sleeve of his shirt.
“He will kill you!”
“He is a coward, Hannah,” Peter replied, gently prying my fingers off his sleeve.
“Cowards only threaten those they believe are weaker than them.”
“It is time he learns that I have never been weak.”
The study door was kicked open with a deafening bang, bouncing hard against the wall molding.
Sean stood in the doorway, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, and his expensive suit wrinkled and stained.
The manicured, polished, and charming persona he had projected to the world for nine years was entirely gone.
In its place was a desperate, unhinged man whose grand scheme had collapsed in a single afternoon.
In his right hand, he held a heavy iron crowbar, the sharp edge dripping with fresh glass dust from the front door.
“Look at the happy newlyweds,” Sean sneered, his voice high-pitched and trembling with violent anger.
“A sixty-seven-year-old old man and the pathetic orphan who couldn’t even keep her own home.”
“You really thought you were clever, didn’t you, Peter?”
“You thought you could outsmart me in my own game!”
Peter walked out from behind the desk, standing directly between Sean and where I was cowering.
“Put the crowbar down, Sean,” Peter said, his voice cold and commanding.
“You are trespassing on my private property, and you are terrifying your children’s mother.”
“My property?!” Sean screamed, taking an aggressive step into the room, raising the iron bar.
“THIS IS MY PROPERTY! EVERYTHING IN THIS HOUSE BELONGS TO ME!”
“THE VANCE TRUST WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MY REWARD FOR PUTTING UP WITH THIS WEAK, USELESS WOMAN FOR NINE YEARS!”
“I SPENT NINE YEARS PRETENDING TO LOVE HER!”
“I SPENT NINE YEARS LISTENING TO HER CRY ABOUT HER PATHETIC LITTLE FEELINGS!”
“I EARNED THAT MONEY!”
Hearing him say those words out loud—hearing him admit that every kiss, every promise, and every shared memory was a lie—cut deeper than any physical blade.
Tears spilled down my cheeks, but the devastating sadness inside me began to turn into something else.
It began to turn into a white-hot, furious rage that I had suppressed for nearly a decade.
I stepped out from behind the mahogany desk, standing side-by-side with Peter.
“I gave you two beautiful children, Sean,” I said, my voice shaking with raw emotion.
“I gave up my career, my independence, and my freedom because I believed you loved our family.”
“You didn’t give me anything, Hannah!” Sean barked, pointing the iron bar directly at my face.
“You were a charity case I picked up off the street!”
“You were nothing until I gave you a roof over your head!”
“And now you think you can sit on three hundred million dollars while I get left with nothing?”
“I am going to take those kids, I am going to sign those trust documents, and if you stand in my way, I will destroy you!”
“You won’t be touching those children ever again, Sean,” Peter said quietly.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the silver revolver, pointing it straight at Sean’s chest.
Sean froze in mid-step, his eyes widening in sudden, frantic shock as he looked down at the barrel of the gun.
“You… you wouldn’t shoot me, old man,” Sean stammered, taking a cautious step back toward the door.
“I’m your son! You raised me!”
“I raised a boy, Sean,” Peter replied, his finger resting lightly on the trigger.
“I did not raise a monster who threatens women and plots the murder of his own wife.”
“Drop the crowbar, or I will end this right now.”
The iron bar clattered loudly against the hardwood floor, echoing through the tense silence of the room.
Sean held his hands up in the air, his face completely draining of color as his bravery vanished instantly.
“Peter… please,” Sean whimpered, his voice suddenly shifting into that weak, manipulative tone he used whenever he lost control.
“I was angry… I didn’t mean it… the stress of the divorce got to me…”
“You know I love Hannah… you know I love the kids…”
“Save your pathetic lies for the judge, Sean,” a new voice called out from the hallway behind him.
Three uniformed police officers flooded into the study, their weapons drawn and focused directly on Sean.
Behind them stood Mr. Sterling, Peter’s chief corporate attorney, holding an active recording device in his hand.
“Sean Vance, you are under arrest for breaking and entering, felony assault, and corporate fraud,” the lead officer announced.
Sean gasped as the officers grabbed his arms, forcing him down onto his knees and pulling his hands behind his back.
“Hannah! Tell them to stop!” Sean shrieked as the steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.
“I’m the father of your children! You can’t do this to me!”
I walked up to him, looking down into the eyes of the man who had tormented me for years.
I felt no pity, no love, and no regret left in my heart.
“You are no father to them, Sean,” I said with cold, absolute finality.
“And you will never see any of us ever again.”
As the officers dragged Sean out of the house, his frantic screaming faded into the distance of the night.
Peter slowly lowered the silver revolver, letting out a long, heavy breath as he turned to look at me.
“Are you alright, Hannah?” he asked softly, his gray eyes filled with genuine concern.
“I’m fine, Peter,” I replied, wiping the tears from my cheeks.
“I think… for the first time in nine years… I am actually fine.”
He smiled warmly, stepping back toward his desk and picking up the thick leather folder.
“Then it is time for us to finish what your mother started thirty years ago,” Peter said.
“There is one final document inside this folder that you haven’t seen yet.”
“A document that will change your children’s lives forever.”
