PART 3: The Shadowing Danger
My hands shook so hard that I almost dropped the phone onto the plush carpet.
“They’re at my house,” I gasped, shoving the phone toward Mr. Sterling.
“Look!”
“They’re tearing the apartment apart!”
Mr. Sterling looked down at the tiny screen, his jaw clenching with sudden fury.
“They are looking for the original hard drive,” Mr. Sterling said urgently.
“Your father encrypted the main master key onto a physical drive before he died.”
“I have the financial records here, but the cryptographic key to unlock the public evidence lies hidden in that apartment.”
“If they find that drive before we do, they can destroy the evidence forever.”
“And once they realize you aren’t home, they will hunt you down.”
“We need to call the federal police right now,” I said, my heart pounding against my ribs.
“The police are compromised, Leo,” Sterling warned, placing a heavy hand on my shoulder.
“The men who ordered your father’s death hold high positions in local government.”
“If we hand this over through normal channels, it will vanish into a storage room and disappear.”
“Your grandmother knew this.”
“She left specific instructions for this exact moment.”
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, worn leather journal.
It was my grandmother’s handwriting notebook—the one she always kept locked in her nightstand.
“She gave me this three years ago when her health first began to decline,” Sterling explained.
“She told me that if the house was ever breached, you would know exactly what to do.”
He handed the notebook to me.
I flipped to the very last page with trembling fingers.
In her familiar, elegant script, she had written a short message directly to me:
“My sweet boy,”
“If you are reading this, the shadows have finally found our door.”
“Do not be afraid.”
“I spent twelve years turning that miserable little apartment into a fortress.”
“Remember the YouTube videos we watched together?”
“Remember how I taught you to fix the floorboards, the radiator pipe, and the old pantry wall?”
“I didn’t teach you those things just to fix the apartment, Leo.”
“I taught you how to hide what matters most.”
“Look under the third floorboard beneath my bed—the one with the rusted nail.”
“Take what is inside, lock the cellar door from the outside, and bring the nightmare to an end.”
“I am always with you.”
Tears blurred my vision as I read her final words over and over again.
She hadn’t just sacrificed her comfort to keep me hidden; she had prepared a trap.
She had spent years anticipating the exact day her enemies would come hunting for us.
“I have to go back there,” I said, looking up at Mr. Sterling with sudden clarity.
“Are you insane, kid?” Sterling barked, his eyes wide with concern.
“Those men are armed professionals!”
“They are searching for something they don’t understand in a house they don’t know,” I replied firmly.
“I know every single creak, shadow, and loose floorboard in that building.”
“My grandmother built that trap for me.”
“And I am going to finish what she started.”
Sterling stared at me for a long, tense moment before slowly reaching into his desk drawer.
He pulled out a sleek, silver tracker unit and handed it to me.
“This is a direct satellite transmitter,” Sterling said quietly.
“The moment you retrieve that drive, press this button.”
“I have a team of private federal investigators waiting on standby outside the city.”
“The second that signal goes live, they will move in with full federal search warrants.”
“Just buy us ten minutes, Leo.”
“Ten minutes.”
I grabbed the tracker, stuffed the journal into my jacket, and headed straight for the private elevator.
Twenty minutes later, the town car dropped me off two blocks away from my alleyway.
The rain was pouring down in thick sheets, drenching my clothes within seconds.
I crept down the dark alley behind our apartment complex, avoiding the streetlights.
The back fire escape ladder was hanging low, just as my grandmother had kept it for years.
I climbed up the rusted iron rungs as silently as a ghost, my heart hammering in my ears.
I reached the window of my grandmother’s old bedroom and peered through the wet glass.
The room had been completely ransacked.
Drawers were pulled out, mattresses were flipped, and clothes were scattered across the floor.
Down the hallway, I could hear heavy boot steps and muted, angry voices.
“It’s not in the living room!” a deep, gruff voice yelled from the front hallway.
“Check the floorboards in the closet!” another voice ordered.
“We have five minutes before the cleanup team arrives!”
“Find that damn drive!”
I carefully pushed the window sash upward, inch by inch, stepping into the dark bedroom.
The air smelled of ozone, damp wood, and cheap cologne.
I dropped to my knees on the cold hardwood floor, feeling for the third board under her bed frame.
My fingers brushed against the familiar, rusted nailhead she had marked years ago.
I wedged my pocketknife under the edge and pried the piece of wood upward.
Beneath the floorboard lay a small, metallic silver hard drive wrapped in thick bubble wrap.
And right next to it was a small glass vial with a handwritten tag attached to it.
I picked up the drive, my fingers wrapping around the cool metal surface.
Suddenly, a heavy shadow loomed over the doorway of the bedroom.
One of the men was standing right there, a heavy tactical flashlight blinding my eyes.
“Well, well, well,” the man sneered, raising a suppressed pistol straight at my chest.
“Look what the little rat dragged out of the floor.”
The man is locking his finger around the trigger… can Leo escape the bedroom before it’s too late? Go to the next page for the thrilling final showdown!
