Part 3: The Paper Trail of Deception
The dark attic was thick with the scent of old dust, cedar boxes, and long-forgotten memories as I carefully navigated through the stacked storage trunks.
Lucy stood near the pull-down ladder, holding a small flashlight as I reached the far corner where Ben’s old corporate work gear was kept.
I pulled out his vintage leather designer briefcase, my hands shaking as I felt along the reinforced inner leather lining near the brass buckle.
My fingers brushed against a small, hard, metallic object embedded deep within the double-stitched seam, precisely where Ben’s note said it would be.
Using a small utility blade, I sliced through the thick leather, pulling out a gleaming, silver high-security bank key stamped with a unique six-digit registration code.
Beside the key was a small flash drive wrapped in protective foil, labeled with a single word written in Ben’s neat handwriting: EVIDENCE.
Suddenly, the loud, distinct sound of heavy car tires crunching over the gravel driveway down below made both Lucy and me freeze in absolute terror.
I crept over to the small round attic window, gently parting the dusty blinds to look down at the driveway leading to our primary residential home.
A sleek, black police cruiser was idling near our garage, its headlights turned off, casting long, ominous shadows across the manicured front lawn.
The driver’s side door opened, and Officer Aaron stepped out into the cool night air, wearing his full police uniform and holding a heavy flashlight.
He didn’t walk up to the front door to ring the bell like a polite family friend; instead, he began walking slowly around the perimeter of the house, shining his flashlight into the ground-floor windows.
“Mom…” Lucy whimpered in a terrifying whisper, pulling my jacket sleeve. “Why is Aaron here at two in the morning?”
“He knows, Lucy,” I realized, a icy chill running down my spine as I remembered that the plush teddy bear had belonged to his late daughter before he gifted it to Lucy years ago.
He must have realized recently that he had accidentally handed over a toy containing Ben’s hidden message, or he had seen our living room lights flicker on late at night.
“Stay behind me, stay quiet, and do not make a sound,” I commanded softly, sliding the bank key and flash drive securely into my inner jacket pocket.
We quietly descended the attic ladder, making our way through the dark upstairs hallway down toward my private home office on the main floor.
I pulled out my smartphone and immediately dialed an encrypted line to Sterling & Vance Private Wealth Management—the legal firm that managed my father’s commercial real estate trust and private equity portfolios.
“Mr. Sterling,” I spoke into the receiver the moment the call connected, my voice tight with suppressed panic.
“I need your senior corporate litigation team, an emergency private security detail, and a forensic accounting auditor at First National Wealth Bank at seven o’clock tomorrow morning.”
“Clara?” Mr. Sterling’s sharp, professional voice answered from the other end. “What is happening? Is everything alright?”
“My husband didn’t die in a storm five years ago, Mr. Sterling,” I said, staring through the office window as Aaron’s flashlight beam swept across the back patio.
“He was targeted by a high-level commercial land fraud syndicate, and the police officer who investigated his disappearance is currently standing outside my home.”
There was a sudden, sharp pause on the line, followed by the immediate sound of Mr. Sterling typing rapidly on his terminal keyboard.
“Clara, listen to me very carefully,” Mr. Sterling instructed with calm, absolute authority.
“Do not confront him. I am dispatching our private armed security detail to your estate right now in a high-performance luxury vehicle.”
“They will secure your five daughters and transport you directly to our private safehouse near the financial district.”
“We will access that bank vault at opening hours, recover those engineering reports, and file emergency federal indictments before Aaron’s syndicate even knows what hit them.”
I hung up the phone, grabbing Lucy’s hand as we slipped out through the side garage door into the darkness, avoiding the front driveway entirely.
Inside the garage, I unlocked my luxury SUV, ushering Lucy into the back seat while I quietly started the powerful engine.
As the automatic garage door rolled upward, Aaron stepped into the frame, his flashlight illuminating my face through the windshield, his expression twisting from friendly concern into a cold, ruthless sneer.
He reached for his belt, but before he could draw his weapon, I slammed my foot onto the accelerator, the powerful SUV roaring to life and tearing past him into the night.
