Part 3: The Economic Collapse
The heavy oak door clicked shut behind me, sealing my husband, Funmi, and thirty stunned guests inside the apartment as I walked down the carpeted hallway toward freedom.
By the time I reached the ground level and unlocked my work van, the high-pitched sound of rapid footsteps echoed down the concrete stairwell.
My husband burst through the exit doors, his designer shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sweat pouring down his neck as he ran across the paved driveway toward me.
“Are you insane?!” he screamed, his voice cracking with unadulterated rage and embarrassment. “You humiliated me in front of my friends! In front of my business contacts!”
I placed my grandmother’s jewelry box securely on the passenger seat of my van, looking back at him with icy, mathematical detachment.
“You told me to be mature, remember?” I replied smoothly, adjusting the side mirror. “A mature person doesn’t stay where they aren’t respected.”
“You can’t just leave me with this lease!” he roared, grabbing the driver’s side door frame with trembling hands.
“The rent on this place is three thousand dollars a month! My commercial credit line is maxed out from the luxury furniture I bought for this party!”
“You knew I was relying on your income to balance my real estate investment portfolio and cover the premium insurance payments for my high-ticket sports sedan!”
I let out a soft, amused laugh that made his blood run cold.
He had spent months pretending to be a wealthy corporate executive, showing off luxury real estate brochures and making down payments on high-performance German cars he couldn’t afford on his salary alone.
He didn’t realize that my quiet, hard-working lifestyle as a licensed commercial plumbing contractor and independent renovation specialist was the sole financial engine keeping his lavish lifestyle afloat.
“I know exactly how much the rent costs,” I said, starting the powerful engine of my van.
“Which is why you should ask Funmi to contribute her share of the housing expenses starting tonight.”
“She brought good wine, after all; perhaps she can help you secure a private banking loan to pay off your corporate debt.”
“Wait… please! Let’s talk about this!” he pleaded, his arrogant posture completely dissolving into pathetic, desperate begging as he realized the catastrophic financial disaster awaiting him inside.
“I’ll block her! I’ll tell her to leave right now! I’ll never speak to her again, I swear to God!”
“It was never about Funmi,” I said, putting the vehicle into gear. “It was about how easily you thought you could disrespect the woman who built your life with you.”
I stepped on the accelerator, leaving him standing alone under the bright streetlights of the parking lot as my van glided smoothly out onto the main avenue toward my best friend Ada’s estate.
Within two hours, news of the housewarming scandal spread across social media like wildfire, accompanied by video clips recorded by several guests attending the party.
His phone was bombarded with urgent messages from his family members, real estate partners, and private bank advisors demanding explanations for his sudden financial exposure.
Funmi, realizing that he was not the wealthy, independent real estate mogul he had pretended to be, quietly grabbed her designer purse, exited the apartment, and blocked his number before midnight.
Left alone in a three-thousand-dollar-a-month luxury apartment surrounded by half-eaten catering trays and unpaid bills, my ex-husband spent his first night in complete, silent ruin.
