PART 4: The Final Choice
“They forgot one tiny detail,” Jonah continued, standing up slowly from his seat.
He walked around the table until he was standing directly in front of me.
He reached out, his warm, steady hand gently cupping my cheek—the exact same gentle touch he had given me through the scratched prison glass for three long years.
“They didn’t expect you to actually care,” Jonah whispered, wiping a tear from my cheek with his thumb.
“They didn’t expect you to spend your nights reading case files, standing outside courthouses, and fighting for a man everyone told you was a criminal.”
“You weren’t supposed to find the missing signatures, Maya. You were supposed to just collect your check and look pretty for the court.”
“When you uncovered my cousin’s forgery, you forced their hand.”
“They had to let me walk free early to stop you from digging deeper into the rest of the family’s accounts.”
He took my shaking hand and pressed the heavy brass key into my palm, closing my fingers over the cold metal.
“Everything inside this box—every account number, every offshore code, every name involved in my family’s syndicate—is cataloged right here,” Jonah said, looking straight into my eyes.
“My family thinks I’m coming home to take my place at their table and stay quiet.”
“They think you’re still just the paid bride who will do what she’s told.”
A slow, terrifying smile broke across Jonah’s face, completely devoid of fear.
“Tomorrow morning, I have a meeting with the federal prosecutor,” he said softly.
“And I told him my wife would be bringing the evidence.”
“You married a prisoner for money, Maya… but tonight, we take down an empire together.”
