Part 3: The True Cost of Deceit
Ryan slammed the briefcase shut, the loud metallic click echoing off the small apartment walls like a gunshot.
“It’s my family’s money, Maya!” he shouted, his face turning red with anger as his polite facade completely shattered.
“My father earned that money! I wasn’t going to let it get swallowed up in shared marital assets before I even had a chance to secure my own future!”
“You made me sleep in a car!” I screamed back, the tears streaming down my cheeks as thirty-four weeks of exhausted, painful silence finally erupted.
“I am carrying your child! I have high blood pressure! The doctor said I was at risk for premature labor, and you made me sleep in the parking lot because you didn’t want to hear me tossing and turning!”
“I needed sleep for my job!” Ryan yelled defensively, pacing back and forth across the small carpeted living room. “I’m trying to launch a commercial venture! I’m negotiating a major private investment deal for a chain of luxury boutique hotels!”
“You don’t have a job anymore, Ryan,” Eleanor said, her voice deathly calm as she pulled her smartphone from her bathrobe pocket.
Ryan stopped dead in his tracks, staring at his mother with wide, terrified eyes. “What are you talking about?”
“The firm you work for—the regional commercial development agency—is a subsidiary of my late husband’s corporate holding company,” Eleanor stated, holding herself with supreme dignity.
“The board of directors answers directly to the family trust’s chief executive trustee, which, until midnight tonight, was me.”
“I called your senior partner twenty minutes ago while sitting in my SUV watching my pregnant daughter-in-law cry in the backseat of a sedan.”
“You have been officially terminated from your position, effective immediately.”
“And as the master trustee of the original Vanderbilt foundation, I have exercised my legal right to freeze all pending transfers from the family trust fund pending a full judicial audit.”
Ryan’s face went completely pale, all the arrogance draining out of him in an instant.
“Mom, no… you can’t do that!” he pleaded, rushing toward her with his hands raised. “That’s my inheritance! You can’t take that away from me over a marital dispute!”
“It is not a simple marital dispute, Ryan,” Eleanor snapped, stepping back and pointing a rigid finger at his chest. “It is a display of breathtaking cruelty and malice.”
“You treated the woman carrying my grandchild like trash so you could force her to leave you, hoping she would walk away from the marriage without realizing what you were worth!”
“You wanted her to get tired and file for divorce first so your corporate lawyers could claim she abandoned the home!”
I stood in absolute shock as the full horror of Ryan’s calculated plan became crystal clear.
He hadn’t just been annoyed by my restless night sleep; he had been deliberately tormenting me, breaking my spirit day after day, hoping I would pack my bags and walk away before I ever discovered his multi-million-dollar estate inheritance.
“Is that true, Ryan?” I asked, my heart breaking into a thousand pieces. “You wanted me to leave?”
Ryan stood silent, unable to meet my eyes, his silence serving as the ultimate confession.
Eleanor took my hand gently, turning her back on her son.
“Maya, my private driver is waiting downstairs in my silver SUV,” she said softly.
“I have a oceanfront estate with a full guest wing, private medical care on call, and luxury accommodations where you can rest properly for the remainder of your pregnancy.”
“My personal legal team will handle everything regarding your separation, your medical bills, and the securing of your child’s trust fund.”
“Mom, please!” Ryan begged, tears finally welling in his eyes as he realized he was losing everything—his job, his trust fund, his reputation, and his family. “Don’t do this to me!”
“You made your choice every night at 3:00 AM when you handed her those car keys, Ryan,” Eleanor said coldly, without looking back. “Now you can enjoy your spacious apartment all by yourself.”
