Part 3: The Price of Treason
Ethan’s thumb hovered over the glowing screen, trembling slightly before he finally answered the call and pressed the device against his ear. He didn’t even have the chance to say hello before a sharp, hysterical female voice burst through the speaker, loud enough for me to hear every single word from where I stood on the porch.
“Ethan! Where are you?” the young waitress screamed, her voice devoid of the timid, soft charm she had displayed at the restaurant. “The bank just called! They said the secondary accounts have been frozen, and the black corporate card you gave me was declined at the jewelry store! What is going on?”
Ethan turned his back to me, pressing his hand over his other ear as he tried to keep his composure. “Chloe, calm down,” he hissed into the receiver, his jaw clenching tightly. “I told you to wait at the house. I am handling the legal arrangements right now. Why are you buying jewelry when the press is watching every move we make?”
“Handling it?” Chloe mocked, her tone rising into a sharp, grating register that made Ethan flinch. “My mother and brothers are here, Ethan! We moved out of our apartment because you said this place was ours now! If the cards don’t work by this afternoon, I’m calling the reporters waiting outside the gate and telling them you tricked me!”
I watched Ethan’s shoulders drop as the reality of his new life settled over him like a suffocating net. The gentle, innocent girl he thought he was saving from a life of hard work was revealing the sharp, greedy claws beneath her quiet facade. He had traded twelve years of unyielding loyalty, shared sacrifice, and silent devotion for a superficial fantasy that was already falling apart at the seams.
“Do not call anyone,” Ethan growled, his voice laced with a mixture of rage and overwhelming exhaustion. “Stay in the house and don’t touch anything until I get back.” He ended the call abruptly, jamming the phone back into his pocket before turning around to face me once again.
The silence between us was heavier now, filled with the undeniable truth of his mistake. He looked at me, taking in my calm demeanor, the peaceful surroundings of the Blue Ridge house, and the absolute absence of jealousy or anger in my eyes. I didn’t care that Chloe was in my old home; I didn’t care that she was spending his money. I was completely free of him.
“She isn’t like you,” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking as he took a slow step closer to the porch railing. “She doesn’t care about the quiet days. She doesn’t care about building anything. All she talks about is the money, the cars, and the events. God, Amelia… what have I done?”
“You made a choice,” I replied, keeping my hands resting casually in my sweater pockets. “You thought my love was something that would just wait on a shelf while you played with shiny new things. You forgot that I stayed with you when you had nothing because I believed in who you were—not because of what you could buy me.”
Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick, leather-bound folder—the final divorce decree, stamped by the court clerk and ready for the irrevocable signatures that would permanently sever our marriage. His fingers tightened around the leather, his knuckles turning white as he looked down at the documents.
“If I sign this,” he said, his voice barely audible over the rustling leaves, “there is no going back. You take sixty percent of the liquid assets, and the board will force me to step down as CEO by next month to salvage the company’s stock.”
“Then don’t sign it,” I said smoothly, stepping back into the warmth of the entryway. “And let the entire world watch your brand-new life tear itself apart from the inside out.”
Ethan looked at me with horror in his eyes as he realized that whether he signed or not, his illusion of total control was completely dead. He reached into his coat, pulled out a heavy silver pen, and uncapped it with shaking fingers. But just as the tip of the pen touched the sign-off line, a large black SUV roared up the dirt road, kicking up clouds of dust before slamming its brakes behind Ethan’s Maybach.
