PART 3: The Secret Ledger
As I approached row 4, Maya was still holding her hand up to the reading light above her seat.
The diamond caught the beam, sparkling brilliantly against her manicured fingers.
I stopped right beside her seat in the aisle, leaning slightly against the overhead compartment.
“That is a truly stunning ring,” I said, my voice dripping with smooth, icy calm.
Maya turned toward me, her eyes wide with the excitement of a woman who thought she was the center of the universe.
“Thank you so much!” she beamed, holding her hand out closer so I could see it better.
“I’m still in absolute shock! I had no idea he was going to do this on a flight!”
“Daniel is full of surprises,” I replied, letting a small, tight smile touch my lips.
Maya blinked, her bright expression flickering for a fraction of a second as she registered my tone.
“Wait… do you know Daniel?” she asked, her eyebrows pulling together in slight confusion.
“Oh, I know him very well,” I said softly, taking a step closer to her seat.
“In fact, I’ve known him for over twelve years.”
“I’m his wife, Emily.”
The silence that followed was absolute, heavy enough to crush the air right out of the cabin.
The middle-aged woman sitting across the aisle stopped mid-sip of her drink, her eyes widening in horror.
Maya’s face went completely drain of color, the triumphant flush vanishing in a single heartbeat.
“What… what did you just say?” Maya stammered, her voice dropping into a frantic whisper.
“You’re lying. Daniel isn’t married. He’s been divorced for five years!”
“He told me his ex-wife was a crazy woman who stole his savings!”
I reached into my leather purse and pulled out my velvet wallet.
I flipped it open, pulling out our original, official marriage certificate that I always kept a copy of in my travel documents.
I held it right in front of her face, pointing directly to the state seal and the date from twelve years ago.
“Does this look like a divorce to you, Maya?” I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
Maya stared at the document, her lips trembling violently as she read the names printed in gold ink.
“Daniel Vance and Emily Vance.”
“No… no, no, no,” Maya whimpered, grabbing her hair with both hands.
“This can’t be happening… he told me I was the only one!”
“He told me he was buying a house for us in Seattle next month!”
She frantically reached into her designer handbag, pulling out a thick, leather-bound notebook.
She flipped it open with trembling fingers, revealing page after page of bank account numbers, property deeds, and signatures.
“Look!” Maya cried out, her voice cracking with pure panic.
“He had me transfer three hundred thousand dollars of my inheritance into a joint investment account last week!”
“He said we were buying a waterfront property together!”
I leaned over and looked down at the ledger in her lap, my blood turning to liquid nitrogen.
The signatures on the property documents weren’t just Daniel’s.
He had forged my signature as the co-signer on a massive mortgage loan under our primary home’s equity.
He wasn’t just living a double life; he was systematically draining my life savings and leveraging my house to fund his affair.
He was planning to crash my financial life into the ground and run away to Seattle with Maya’s inheritance.
A wave of intense, sickening nausea hit me, but I forced myself to stand tall and rigid.
“He didn’t just lie to me, Maya,” I said, looking straight into her tear-filled eyes.
“He used both of us.”
“He used my credit to back his loans, and he used your inheritance to build his escape hatch.”
Maya buried her face in her hands, letting out a ragged, heartbroken sob that drew the attention of the lead flight attendant.
The senior flight attendant, a stern woman named Brenda, rushed down the aisle with a look of deep concern.
“Is everything alright back here?” Brenda asked, looking between the weeping fiancée and me in my red dress.
“Ma’am, you need to return to your seat immediately.”
I looked Brenda directly in the eye, pulling my marriage certificate back out.
“Brenda, my name is Emily Vance. I am Captain Daniel’s legal wife.”
“And your captain is currently committing massive financial fraud using aircraft communications.”
Brenda stared at the certificate, then at Maya, her professional demeanor instantly hardening into severe alarm.
“Is this a joke?” Brenda demanded, her voice low and dangerous.
“I wish it were,” I replied coldly. “Now, I suggest you call the cockpit on the interphone right now.”
“Or I will walk up to that steel door myself and let every passenger on this plane know what kind of man is flying them.”
Brenda didn’t hesitate; she turned on her heel and marched straight toward the forward galley interphone.
Maya looked up at me through her tears, holding out the ledger containing all the forged documents.
“What are we going to do?” Maya whispered, her hands shaking violently.
I took the ledger from her hands and held it firmly against my chest.
“We are going to make sure he never steps foot in a cockpit ever again,” I said.
Suddenly, the flight attendant interphone chimed loudly throughout the cabin, three sharp, urgent rings.
Captain Daniel is about to answer the interphone… does he know his entire life is about to explode? Go to the next page for the thrilling final showdown!
