Part 2: The Science of Baking Soda & Petroleum Jelly

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is highly alkaline with a pH around 9, whereas healthy skin maintains a slightly acidic barrier (pH 4.5 to 5.5). Applying baking soda directly to skin disrupts this protective acid mantle, causing severe dryness, irritation, and barrier damage.

Petroleum jelly, on the other hand, is an occlusive agent. It creates a physical seal over the skin to trap moisture inside, but it cannot repair micro-tears or chemical burns caused by coarse, alkaline baking soda scrubs.
