Part 2: The Science of Age Spots (Solar Lentigines)

The flat brown spots that appear on the backs of the hands, face, and chest are medical known as solar lentigines—commonly called age spots, liver spots, or sun spots.

They form when UV radiation triggers pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) to produce an overabundance of melanin in concentrated clusters. Because these pigment deposits sit below the skin’s surface, quick surface scrubs cannot wipe them away in a single application.
