Part 2: The Science Behind Ring-Shaped Lesions

The distinctive circular lesion shown in the image is most characteristic of Tinea Corporis, commonly known as ringworm.

Despite its alarming name, ringworm is not caused by a parasite or worm at all. It is a superficial fungal infection (dermatophytosis) that thrives on keratin, a protective protein found in the outer layer of human skin, hair, and nails. As the fungus grows outward from the center, it creates a raised, scaly red border with relative clearing in the middle.
