Part 4: Recognizing the Stages of Nerve Irritation
Nerve damage typically progresses through distinct stages, starting subtle before becoming more noticeable over time:
- Early Stage (Hyperactivity): Burning sensations and hypersensitivity usually appear first as irritated nerve endings fire randomly.
- Intermediate Stage (Paresthesia): The classic “pins and needles” or crawling feeling occurs as nerve communication becomes scrambled.
- Advanced Stage (Loss of Sensation): Prolonged nerve impairment leads to partial or total numbness, making it hard to feel temperature changes or small injuries.
- Motor Involvement: Extended nerve compromise can cause muscle weakness in the feet, leading to loss of balance or altered walking gait.
