Part 4: Delicate Gems That Need Extra Caution
Not all jewelry can handle soaking or scrubbing. Soft, porous, or organic gems require ultra-gentle treatment to avoid severe discoloration or cracking:
- Pearls & Mother-of-Pearl: Organic gems are sensitive to acid and excess moisture; clean them only by wiping with a barely damp, soft cloth.
- Opals & Emeralds: Porous or fracture-filled stones can absorb liquids or crack easily; avoid soaking them in hot water or harsh soaps.
- Turquoise & Coral: Chemical cleaners and harsh soaps can cause porous stones to strip color or degrade over time.
- Costume & Glued Jewelry: Water can dissolve the glue holding faux stones in place, causing them to fall out.
