While highly effective for solid sterling silver, this chemical reaction should be avoided with certain jewelry pieces:

  • Porous Gemstones: Never submerge pearls, opals, turquoise, emeralds, or amber, as hot water and baking soda can damage their delicate surface structures.
  • Antique Oxidized Detailing: Avoid using on vintage silver designed with intentional dark patina or contrast in carved recessed lines.
  • Glued Elements & Costume Jewelry: Hot water can weaken adhesives holding rhinestones or faux gems, and base metals (like brass or copper) will not react positively.
