THE FORGOTTEN WIFE

I thought I was coming home to surprise my wife after months overseas. After building everything from nothing, I wanted one perfect moment: a quiet entrance and a smile on her face. The diamond necklace hidden inside my jacket was supposed to tell Clara one thing: “I never forgot you.”

She was the woman who stayed when I had nothing, long before the money, before the success, and before people suddenly wanted to call me family. But when I opened the door, I didn’t hear excitement. I heard laughter, music, and glasses clinking from a celebration paid for with my money.

Inside the mansion I built, my relatives were drinking expensive champagne, eating the food my wife prepared, and enjoying a party they never asked permission to host. And then I saw her—not among the guests, but in the back kitchen alone, washing mountains of dirty dishes with red, swollen hands.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t move, because the woman who had once stood beside me through every struggle looked afraid to even stop working. She saw me, and instead of running into my arms, she apologized: “Julian… I’m sorry. I was trying to finish before you came home.”

That sentence broke something inside me, because people don’t apologize like that unless someone has trained them to believe they are always wrong. While I was away building an empire, someone had been destroying the woman who helped me build it.

Sienna appeared behind me, trying to smile: “Julian, it’s not what you think. We were just helping Clara.” I looked at my wife’s hands, then reached into my pocket for my phone to access the security system I had secretly installed years ago.

Every camera, every recording, and every conversation was now in my hands. I lifted Clara into my arms, turned to my relative, and called my security director, Marcus. But the first recording he sent revealed a betrayal that started long before tonight.
