My heart hammered against my ribs as Peter reached inside his suit jacket and pulled out a thick, yellowed envelope.
“I didn’t marry you out of pity,” Peter said, his voice dropping to a low, steady cadence. “And I certainly didn’t do it to get back at my son.”
He placed the envelope on the dining table between us. It was sealed with red wax and addressed to me in handwriting I hadn’t seen in over fifteen years—the handwriting of my late mother.
“Where… where did you get this?” I stammered, stepping back.
“Your mother and my late wife were business partners long before you met Sean,” Peter explained softly. “Before she passed away, your mother left half of her real estate portfolio and investment holdings in a blind trust managed by my firm, meant to unlock on your thirtieth birthday—which is next month.”
I stared at him, my mind racing. “Why didn’t you just tell me? Why force a marriage?”
Peter looked toward the hallway leading to the kids’ bedrooms before turning back to me with grim eyes.
“Because Sean found out about the trust six months ago,” Peter said. “And the moment he did, he planned to use your kids to claim full control of it.”
What did Peter reveal about Sean’s true plan? Continue reading Part 3 below to uncover the scheme.
