PART 2: The Stolen Legacy

The classmate, a quiet man named David whom I recognized from Marcus’s study group, took my elbow and gently guided me into an empty lecture hall away from the celebrating crowd.

“Marcus didn’t pass those final licensing board exams on his own, Sarah,” David whispered, pulling a flash drive from his coat pocket. “And he didn’t just ask for a divorce because he wanted a fresh start.”

My hands trembled against the cold laminated divorce papers. “What are you talking about?”

“Two years ago, when you gave up your seat, you didn’t just drop out,” David said, his eyes filled with profound sympathy. “You put your academic file on hold. Marcus discovered six months ago that the university board granted you a full retroactive scholarship to finish your degree whenever you returned.”

“He knew?” I choked out, a wave of nausea washing over me.

“He hid the acceptance letters sent to your house,” David revealed. “He knew that if you finished your medical degree, you would graduate at the top of the class—and the residency director was planning to offer you the head surgical position he’s been begging for.”
