PART 2: The Stunned Silence

The lobby had become so quiet you could hear the faint hum of the fluorescent lights overhead. Ethan stepped out of the elevator holding his morning coffee, his eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on the scene in front of him.

His gaze dropped from my face to the two massive suitcases leaning against Lila’s legs, then to the stunned faces of his colleagues standing nearby. The relaxed, confident expression he carried every morning melted away in a single second.

“Victoria?” he stammered, taking a hesitant step forward while his coffee cup trembled in his grip. “What… what are you doing here?”

Lila looked down at the luggage, then up at Ethan, her face flushing a deep, embarrassed red as the realization of what was happening hit her in front of her entire department.

“I saved you the trip home tonight, Ethan,” I said, keeping my voice perfectly calm and crystalline. Would he try to make excuses in front of his entire company? Continue reading Part 3 below to see his reaction.
