The bright auditorium lights glinted off the polished stage as the dean stepped aside, yielding the microphone to Nadia, Camille, and Zora. The crowd grew quiet, curiosity humming through the packed row of bleachers as my nieces adjusted their caps. I clutched the heavy strap of my shaking camera, my bad knee throbbing, completely baffled as to why the three of them were standing together again instead of joining the procession.

Nadia stepped forward first, her voice ringing clear through the loudspeakers while her sisters held hands tightly beside her. She didn’t speak about their academic honors, their future careers, or the university faculty. Instead, she fixed her eyes directly on the center aisle, right where I was standing in my worn suit jacket. The entire stadium turned around, following her gaze straight to where I froze in place.
