THE HIDDEN TAPE

“If you spill that water one more time, you’ll stay on your knees until that baby comes out of you!”

I heard my mother’s voice before I’d even fully stepped through the front door.

I’d come home unannounced to grab a file for a board meeting. I assumed my wife was resting upstairs — she was eight months pregnant, doctor’s orders to stay off her feet.

What I saw through the glass hallway wall stole the air out of my chest.

Vanessa was on her knees on the cold tile, her dress soaked through, her swollen hands submerged in a basin of steaming water and lemon slices.

Across from her, my mother sat in a leather armchair eating pecan pie, watching my eight-months-pregnant wife wash her feet like it was the most natural thing in the world.

“Harder,” my mother said, not even looking up. “You’re living off my son’s money. The least you can do is show some gratitude.”

Vanessa lost her balance for a second, catching herself against the basin’s edge.

Instead of helping her up, my mother lifted one foot and drove it, hard, into the side of Vanessa’s belly.

I don’t remember dropping my briefcase. I only remember the sound of it hitting the hardwood.

Something came loose in me. I crossed that room in four strides, got both hands on my mother’s shoulders, and shoved her backward, hard enough that she went into the armchair and off it, splashing through the basin water.

In thirty-eight years, I’d never once raised my voice at my mother. Never laid a hand on her.

But the woman on the floor didn’t look like anyone I recognized.

I dropped beside Vanessa. Her lip was split where she’d bitten down on it. She was shaking hard enough that I could feel it through her shoulders.

“How long has this been happening?”

She wouldn’t meet my eyes. “I didn’t want you stuck in the middle.”

I went upstairs. Packed two suitcases with my mother’s things. Carried them out myself.

“You’re not coming back into this house,” I said.

“You ungrateful boy,” she snapped. “This house is half mine. You only have that company because of me. When your brother gets here, we’re taking all of it.”
