I sensed something was off the instant I turned into my driveway. My garage door stood completely open, and my SUV had disappeared.
My first thought was that someone had stolen it. Then my father stepped out of the garage holding my spare key, wearing a smile as though he’d done me an incredible favor.
“Don’t get upset,” he said. “Your sister needed it more.”
I stared at him. “What?”
He shrugged. “Emily’s a mother now. She has a baby. She should have a dependable SUV.”
I blinked. “You gave her my vehicle?”
“It’s family,” he answered. “You can always get another one.”
For a few seconds, I couldn’t even find the words. That SUV wasn’t something I had been given. I’d spent four years working extra hours until it was completely paid off.
Every monthly installment. Every insurance payment. Every maintenance bill. Mine.
Dad flipped the spare key back into my hand. “She already drove it to her house.”
I glanced at the empty garage, then back at him. “You never thought about asking me first?”
He chuckled. “Since when does family ask for permission?”
I felt years of old memories flooding back. Emily always received whatever she wanted. My college savings became her wedding budget. My bedroom became her nursery after she became pregnant. Now my SUV had become hers.
Dad crossed his arms. “You’re single. She has responsibilities.”
I wanted to argue. Instead, I drew a slow breath. “Okay.”
He smiled with satisfaction, convinced I’d finally accepted everything. I quietly shut the garage door, climbed into my rental car, and drove away.
I didn’t raise my voice. I didn’t make any threats. That evening, my phone rang.
It was Dad. “Where are you?” he asked sharply.
“Out.”
“When are you bringing the garage opener back?”
I smiled. “I don’t think you’ll be needing it anymore.”
A long silence followed. Then his tone changed. “What are you talking about?”
I looked across my apartment at the paperwork resting on my desk. “The garage won’t be available for you to use much longer.”
Dad believed giving away my SUV was the end of the story. He had no idea that the empty garage was only the first thing he was about to lose—and the reason behind it would leave the entire family completely speechless.
