My husband was buying diamonds for his mistress while I was slowly erasing myself from his life. By the time he realized we had left, all he had left was a yellow envelope and the first proof that would end him.
At 9:12 that morning, Daniel kissed my forehead and said he had an urgent meeting. He wore the navy blue suit I had bought for our tenth anniversary.
—Don’t wait up —he said.
I smiled. —I won’t.
As soon as his car disappeared, I opened the tracking app connected to our shared family account. Daniel passed by his office and stopped in front of Bellamy Jewelers. I already knew why.
For six months, he had been sleeping with Vanessa, the glamorous marketing director of his company. He thought I was too exhausted raising our eight-year-old son, Noah, to notice the late-night calls, hotel bills, and perfume on his shirts.
Vanessa had even mocked me in a voice message that Daniel had forgotten to delete. —She will never leave —she had said. —Claire has no money, no career, nowhere to go.

At noon, the movers took out the last boxes from the house. Noah took my hand as we got into the black car driven by my lawyer, Evelyn Hart.
—Is Dad coming with us? —Noah asked in a low voice.
I held back my pain and squeezed his hand gently. —Not today, sweetheart.
At four o’clock, Daniel returned carrying bags from luxury stores. The security cameras would later show how he entered the house smiling, expecting to find me where he left me.
Then he saw the silence. There were no toys. No family photographs. No clothes in the closets.
Just a yellow envelope under the dining room lamp. My phone rang seconds later.
—Where are you? —he shouted into the speaker. I heard him tearing open the paper on the other end.
—In a safe place, —I answered calmly.
—What the hell is this? —his voice cracked with sudden panic.
—The divorce papers. The account freezing notifications. And a photograph.
His breathing stopped dead on the line. The photograph showed Daniel and Vanessa leaving a hotel with Marcus Vale, the government contractor whose bribery investigation was already making headlines.
—You chose the wrong woman to take for a fool, —I whispered into the phone.
Then I hung up the call…
