I pushed the folder back to the middle of the table, picked up my purse, and stood up. The sudden movement caught the attention of everyone who was still sitting down. Chris looked up at me, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion as he noticed I was already slinging my bag over my shoulder. He asked me where I was going, pointing out that the waiter was waiting near the station.

I looked around the table, making eye contact with my father-in-law, who was staring blankly at the single twenty-dollar bill peeking out from the folder. I kept my voice clear, confident, and perfectly pleasant so that everyone at the table could hear every single word. I explained that I had calculated my exact share of the meal—a basic garden salad and tap water, along with a very generous tip for our wonderful waiter—and that my twenty dollars covered my portion entirely. I added that since it was my father-in-law’s birthday, it seemed only right that his seven adult children and their spouses handle the rest of the bill among themselves.

A stunned, absolute silence fell over the table. The sister-in-law who had been staring at her phone suddenly dropped her hands, her eyes wide with shock. Chris’s brother, who was just walking back from his fake phone call, froze mid-step near the chair. Chris looked at me as if I were speaking a foreign language, his voice cracking slightly as he blurted out that we always paid as a couple and that I couldn’t just leave them like this.

I smiled at Chris, patted his shoulder gently, and told him that it was easier this way, echoing the exact phrase he had used on me so many times before. I wished my father-in-law a happy birthday, thanked the table for the pleasant evening, and walked out of the restaurant into the cool night air.

Standing on the sidewalk, I took a deep breath of fresh air and started my car. As I pulled out of the parking space, I could see through the restaurant’s large glass windows. The entire family was clustered around the table in complete panic, frantically pulling out wallets, counting cash, and arguing over who owed what for the steak and wine. For the first time in years, I drove home with a lighter heart, knowing that the bank of generosity was officially closed for good.
