Gertrude’s hand crept closer.

Three inches.

Two inches.

One inch.

Just as her fingernail was about to make contact with my sternum, a sudden breeze rustled through the dense green canopy above us. 🍃

A massive, heavy seed pod detached from the overhead branch and fell straight down, landing with a loud thwack right on top of Gertrude’s expensive sun hat.

Gertrude shrieked loudly, jumping backward three feet and knocking right into a large pot of prized hydrangeas.

The entire crowd erupted into utter chaos.

Judges rushed forward to help her up, clipboards were dropped into the mud, and scoring papers flew into the air like frightened white birds taking flight.

In the middle of the frantic commotion, Mrs. Gable quickly patted my shoulder and whispered, “Good heavy resin! Stood firm through the whole storm!”

I remained completely frozen, but deep inside my chest, my heart was hammering like a bass drum at a heavy metal concert. 🥁

That night, after the garden club members had finally packed up their clipboards and left—awarding Mrs. Gable first place for “Most Dramatic Wildlife Integration”—the garden fell quiet once again.

The moonlight filtered softly through the bamboo leaves, casting long, silver shadows across the dark, damp soil.

I slowly let out the breath I had been holding for what felt like twelve whole hours.

My heavy shoulders slumped.

My knees unlocked with a satisfying series of loud cracks. 🦴

I stood up to my full height, towering high over the ferns that had protected my secret for so many days.

I walked over to the stone fountain, dipped my big hands into the cool water, and drank deeply.

As I washed the dust from my face, I looked down at my reflection in the dark, still water.

I saw a creature who had spent weeks hiding, holding back every natural urge, and pretending to be something cold and lifeless just to feel safe in a world that didn’t understand him.

I thought about the way Mrs. Gable had smiled every single morning when she walked out onto her porch with her morning coffee, looking over at me with genuine joy.

She thought I was a beautiful piece of art that made her backyard feel alive.

And in a strange, unexpected way, maybe I really was.

Suddenly, I heard the sharp creak of the back patio door. 🚪

I froze instantly, preparing to sink back into my statue pose behind the giant leaves.

But it was too late to hide completely.

Mrs. Gable walked out into the cool moonlight, wearing her fuzzy bathrobe and carrying a large silver platter.

She didn’t stop at the patio.

She walked straight past the fake ceramic jaguar, straight past the plastic toucan, and walked right up to the edge of the bamboo grove where I was standing tall.

She stopped just two feet away.

She looked up into my eyes—not with shock, not with fear, but with a gentle, knowing smile. 😊

She placed the silver platter down on a clean flat stone right in front of my feet.

On the platter was a neat pile of peeled bananas, three crisp apples, and a large bunch of fresh, sweet grapes. 🍇🍎🍌

“I know resin statues don’t eat sixteen pounds of bamboo every single night, Barnaby,” she said softly, her voice warm in the cool night air.

My eyes widened in surprise.

“And resin statues certainly don’t shift three inches to the left when the afternoon sun gets too hot,” she added with a gentle chuckle.

I stood completely still, unsure of what to do next.
