“He bought that the week before we broke up,” I whispered, pressing the paper to my chest. “He never threw it away.”

“He never stopped loving you, Eleanor,” Mr. Vance said softly. “The house you were thrown out of actually belongs to a family trust that dictates it must be sold upon his death, with the proceeds split among his children. They think they won a grand prize by kicking you out, but in reality, that house is heavily mortgaged. Garrett shifted his actual wealth to you, safely out of their reach, weeks before he passed.”

The lawyer explained that Richard and Cassandra would receive the house, but they would also inherit the massive debt attached to it. Garrett had spent his final weeks quietly liquidating his unprotected assets and transferring them into the trust for me, ensuring that his children’s greed would ultimately be their own undoing.

Two days later, the front door of my trailer rattled violently. I opened it to find Richard and Cassandra standing on the steps, their faces pale with rage. Cassandra was holding a copy of a legal notice she had received from Mr. Vance’s office.

“What is the meaning of this?” Richard demanded, trying to push his way past me. “Where is our father’s personal account? The bank says it was closed last month. And what do you mean we owe money on the estate?”

I stood my ground, feeling a strength I hadn’t felt since the day they forced me out in the rain. I looked at Cassandra, who was wearing a designer coat that cost more than my trailer, and then at Richard, whose face was contorted with bitter resentment.

“Your father left you exactly what you cared about,” I said, my voice calm and steady. “He left you the house. He left you the furniture. He left you every single material possession you refused to let me take. If there are debts on those things, then that is between you and the bank.”
