[The Owner of the Aldren]

Part Two of the Story… 👇

Family Confrontation

My father stared at me, his mouth opening slightly before snapping shut. The silence at the table became heavy, suffocating the ambient noise of the dining room. He looked around the space, his eyes darting from the high coffered ceilings to the custom brass fixtures, trying to find a loophole in the reality I had just laid out before him.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” he finally sputtered, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “You don’t own a property like this. The Aldren is backed by an investment group out of Atlanta. Derek’s firm reviewed the municipal development filings last quarter. You’re an employee, Maya. A glorified manager playing dress-up in a nice building.”

I kept my hands resting flat against my sides, refusing to lean into his space, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me defensive. “The Atlanta group was the primary lienholder during the initial construction phase,” I said, my voice steady and even. “They pulled out during the supply chain collapse three years ago. I bought out their distressed debt, restructured the financing through a local credit union, and took one hundred percent equity. The deed, the commercial permits, and the ground lease are all under my LLC. If your contact in the leasing office checks his database on Monday morning, he will see my signature on the master title.”

My mother’s hand dropped from her clutch. She looked at my father, her eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and sudden alarm. The practiced, gentle expression she had worn in the lobby completely dissolved, leaving behind the sharp lines of worry. Cassandra slowly turned her phone face down on the tablecloth, her posture shifting as she realized the dynamic in the room had permanently altered.

“Maya, sweetheart,” my mother stammered, her voice losing its sweetness. “We didn’t know. You never told us you were doing so well. A family should share these kinds of milestones.”

“You didn’t know because you blocked my number the day I asked for help with my final semester’s tuition,” I said. “You changed your home address without leaving a forwarding note when you moved to the coast. I didn’t cut you off. You simply stopped looking back because you assumed there was nothing left here to take.”

My father’s face flushed a deep, angry crimson. The illusion of his leverage had vanished, leaving him exposed in front of his daughter and his daughter’s staff. He slammed his palm against the table, causing the silverware to rattle against the porcelain.

“We raised you,” he hissed. “We gave you a roof over your head for eighteen years. You wouldn’t even know how to speak to investors if it weren’t for the schools we put you in. Now you’re going to sit on a fortune and watch your brother’s career stall out over a drop in the bucket? Sixty thousand dollars is nothing to a place like this. It’s a tax write-off for you.”

“It’s not a tax write-off, and it’s not your money,” I replied. “The conversation is over. I need to ask you to pay your bill and leave the premises.”

Before he could speak, I turned and walked away. I didn’t look back to see their reactions. I walked through the kitchen doors, breathing in the scent of roasted garlic and herbs, letting the familiar, structured chaos of the line cooks reset my focus. I checked the expo screen, confirmed the dessert service for the rooftop was on schedule, and then took the service elevator up to the top floor.
