I didn’t wait for their reply. I walked out to my car, drove to the local hardware store, and purchased new deadbolts for every exterior door in the house. When I returned, I hired a locksmith to install them immediately while Louis and Carla frantically packed their belongings into cardboard boxes, arguing loudly in the upstairs hallway about whose fault this was.
By Monday afternoon, the house was completely empty. The silence that filled the rooms was no longer heavy with grief or resentment; it felt clean, like a fresh canvas. I sat down at the dining table, looking at the empty space where the dog bowl had sat less than forty-eight hours prior. I poured myself a simple cup of tea, picked up my phone, and began typing a message to our extended family group chat, attaching the copies of the fraudulent bank statements and the forged deed.
The truth was finally out in the open, and for the first time in nine years, I felt like the master of my own home again.
