PART 2: The Contents of the Box

Jonah reached across the table, his fingers tracing the sharp corners of the heavy black box.

“When my mother offered you that money, you thought it was out of desperate maternal love,” Jonah said quietly, his voice flat and unreadable.

“You thought she was paying a stranger to help make her son look like a settled man for the parole board.”

I swallowed hard, my heart hammering against my ribs.

“Wasn’t she?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Jonah slowly unlatched the front clasp of the box and lifted the lid.

Inside rested three thick, worn leather notebooks and a heavy brass key stamped with a serial number.

He didn’t pull them out.

Instead, he looked up, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the small kitchen feel microscopic.

“My cousin didn’t act alone when he framed me,” Jonah said.

“My mother knew. The whole family knew.”

The room seemed to tilt beneath me.

“Your mother?” I stuttered. “Jonah, she paid me every single month. She wept in the visitor’s lobby every time she saw you!”

“She paid you to keep you close,” Jonah corrected gently, though his eyes remained ice-cold.

“My family didn’t just steal from the charity, Maya. They used the charity to wash money for people who don’t leave paper trails.”

“When the authorities started digging three years ago, someone had to take the fall to keep the whole operation from collapsing.”

“I was the chosen sacrifice.”
