I grew up in a family where appearances were everything. My parents imagined I’d marry a doctor, lawyer, nice house, life they could brag about at country club.
Then I met Cole. Guitarist in a local rock band. Rides a Harley. Tattoos covering both arms, neck to knuckles. To my parents, that was enough to decide who he was.
“You’re throwing your future away,” Dad said. “You’ll regret this,” Mom cried. When I refused to cancel the wedding, they said: “If you marry him, we won’t come.” They didn’t. Two empty seats in the front row. I cried before walking down the aisle, but I married him anyway.
For a year, my parents barely spoke to me. Cole and I? We were happy. We built a small, loud, perfect life in our little apartment over his music shop. I hoped one day they’d see what I saw.
Then one evening – knock on the door. My father. I hadn’t seen him in months. Pale. Shaking. Not here to say sorry.
Cole stepped into the hallway. My father didn’t look at me. He stared straight at Cole.
“I saw you with a little boy outside the hospital,” he said, voice low and hard. Cole’s face went completely blank. That unreadable look I’d never seen before.
Dad stepped closer, eyes locked on him. “You need to tell the truth now. You need to tell my daughter who that boy is. Before I do.”
My stomach dropped. A little boy? Hospital? Truth?
I turned to Cole, my tattooed, sweet, rocker husband who tucks me in every night and writes me songs. “Cole?” I whispered. “What is he talking about? Who’s the little boy?”
Cole looked at me, then at my father, then closed his eyes. And said 7 words that made my knees buckle.
“I’m so sorry, babe. He’s my son.”
