THE SECRET BY THE RÍO VERDE

Nico Mendoza knew the value of almost everything. A plastic bottle. A piece of bread. A dry place to sleep. A few coins in his hand before sunset.

At twelve years old, he had learned lessons most adults never faced. But that afternoon, beside the muddy Río Verde, he found something that did not have a price.

He was reaching through the reeds for an empty bottle when his fingers touched something else. Not plastic. Not trash. Something heavy, wrapped tightly beneath a torn piece of fabric.

Nico looked around. The riverbank was empty. No adults. No police. No one watching.

For a moment, hunger told him to ignore it. Maybe it was money. Maybe it was food. Maybe it was the one lucky thing that could get him through another week.

But then he heard Rosa’s voice in his memory: “Being hungry can make your stomach empty, Nicolás…”

He pulled the object from the mud. And when he opened it, he froze.

Inside was not trash. Not coins. Not something abandoned.

It was a small leather case containing documents, photographs, and a name that made no sense. A name he had seen only on television. A name connected to one of the richest families in Ciudad de Esperanza.

Nico thought he had found someone’s lost belongings. He had no idea he had just uncovered a secret that powerful people had spent years trying to bury.

The next morning, when he brought the case to the address written inside, the security guards laughed at him. A dirty boy. Old clothes. A backpack full of bottles. They told him to leave.

Until an elderly woman inside the mansion saw the case in his hands. And the moment she opened it… her face lost all color.

Because the boy standing at the gate was holding the one thing she thought had disappeared forever. A secret that could destroy her entire family.

PART 2: THE REVELATION AT THE GATE

The elderly matriarch, Doña Beatrix, ordered the heavy iron gates opened immediately, ignoring the protests of her armed guards.

Her trembling hands took the muddy leather case from Nico as if it were made of fragile glass. Inside sat an official birth certificate, a faded hospital bracelet, and a silver medallion engraved with a family crest.

The documents proved that twelve years ago, Doña Beatrix’s late daughter had given birth to a healthy baby boy shortly before her mysterious death.

Her ruthless son, Julian, had claimed the infant died at birth, allowing him to seize control of the vast family fortune for himself.

Doña Beatrix looked up from the birth record and gasped as her eyes landed on Nico’s face, recognizing her late daughter’s exact eyes staring back at her.

“What is your full name, child?” she whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of sudden realization.

Before Nico could answer, a sleek black sedan pulled up the estate’s driveway, and Julian stepped out, his expression darkening as he spotted the leather case.
