I had worked as an event planner for years, but nothing could have prepared me for Vanessa’s wedding. She was willing to spend millions, yet she demanded complete privacy.
“If you make EVEN ONE MISTAKE, I’ll end your career,” she said with a sweet smile. I swallowed every insult, knowing I had no choice.
My husband, Sean, had been unemployed for months. He disappeared for entire days and returned home late at night, claiming he had been attending job interviews. Yet somehow, he never actually found a job.
So this wedding was the only thing keeping us from losing our home. Vanessa and I met almost every day, and she had strict demands about everything—from the exact shade of the napkins to the shape of the petals decorating the floral arch.
But the strangest part was that I never met the groom. Vanessa claimed he was overseas, and every question had to go through his personal assistant.
The night before the wedding, Sean kissed my forehead and said he had an important interview in Chicago. “This job will SAVE ME FROM POVERTY. I’ll call you afterward,” he promised.
I didn’t understand why he said the job would save only HIM from poverty—not both of us—but I was too exhausted to question it. On Saturday evening, three hundred guests filled the grand courtyard.
Vanessa stood beneath the floral arch in a pearl-covered gown, furious because the sunset was apparently “too orange.” Then a black limousine slowly rolled through the gates.
The announcer raised his microphone: “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the groom—Adrian!” The limousine doors opened, and my heart nearly stopped.
It was MY HUSBAND, Sean. He stepped out wearing the tuxedo I had chosen for our anniversary. Sean smiled and waved confidently at the guests—until his eyes found mine beside the flower arch.
His face instantly turned white. Vanessa followed his stare and smirked. “Oh,” she murmured. “You never told me you knew the staff.”
For one long second, I couldn’t breathe. Then I smiled back at her—the same sweet smile she had worn when she threatened to destroy my career. And calmly reached for the microphone.
