My husband, Brian, and I had spent five years saving for our first home.
We skipped vacations, drove our old cars until they barely ran, and celebrated every time our savings account grew a little larger. We kept reminding each other that every sacrifice would be worth it the day we finally held the keys to our own house.
Or at least, that’s what I believed.
Brian’s mother had always insisted she knew how to make money. She was constantly talking about “once-in-a-lifetime investments” and bragging about people who had doubled their savings by trusting the right opportunity.
I never believed a word of it.
One evening, I logged into our joint account to pay a bill, but the balance was completely empty. At first, I thought it had to be a banking error. Then I found the transfer. EVERY dollar we’d spent years saving had been sent to my mother-in-law’s account.
When Brian came home, I demanded an explanation, and he didn’t even try to deny it.
“Mom found an incredible investment,” he said. “She promised she’d double our money in a few months. I wanted it to be a surprise.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. He hadn’t asked me or even told me. He had handed over our entire future because his mother said it was a good idea.
That night, while Brian insisted I would “thank him later,” I quietly made one decision.
The following afternoon, I heard his car screech into the driveway. Seconds later, the front door flew open, Brian rushed into the house, his face pale with panic, and shouted, “How could you do this to me?!”
